Christmas Concerts: 13 Dec 2014 at St Lawrence’s Arts Centre, South Walsham. 14th Dec St Matthew’s Church, Thorpe Hamlet
Showcasing a rich mix of the unfamiliar and the usual suspects, the Jays gave the traditional Christmas themes an invigorating twist.
Our seasonal programme spanned music from the sixteenth century to the present day – from William Byrd to Richard Rodney Bennett, Tchaikovsky to John Tavener – with additional contributions by Britten, Holst and Whitacre.
There were well-known carols in arrangements by Kodaly, Poston, Rutter and Willcocks, and Poulenc’s atmospheric Four Christmas Motets added French flavour to this Noël celebration.
Entertaining and eclectic readings, – of both poetry and prose extracts from a range of favourite writers including Wendy Cope, Carol Ann Duffy and U A Fanthorpe – also featured, and each concert concluded with ingeniously fresh takes on the ever-popular Jingle Bells and Winter Wonderland.
